Dating used to be a local trust system. You met through friends, workplaces, universities, neighbourhoods. The trust came from social graph overlap.
App dating is a global trust system. It matches strangers and then encourages them to meet in private. The platform is the trust broker whether it admits it or not.
๐ชช Thesis: once a platform is brokering intimate encounters at scale, identity is no longer a "feature". It becomes infrastructure.
Verification pressure is coming from three directions at once:
- Safety expectation. Users want fewer bots, fewer scams, fewer catfish, fewer predators.
- Regulatory direction. Governments are increasingly asking platforms to prove they can protect minors and reduce foreseeable harm.
- Economics. Fraud and abuse are expensive. They increase support burden, reduce retention, and damage brand trust.
What verification actually solves (and what it does not)
Reducing large-scale bot farms, deterring casual impersonation, and raising the cost of repeat abuse.
Coercion, harassment, stalking, or assault. Identity proof does not make someone safe.
It is tempting to treat verification like a magic shield. It is not. It is one layer in a defence-in-depth system. If the rest of the platform is designed around engagement and growth at all costs, verified users can still be harmed.

The new risks verification creates
Verification is a trade. You reduce one class of harm by increasing another. The question is whether the trade is explicit and well managed.
1) Exclusion risk
Some legitimate users cannot or will not provide documents. This includes people without stable housing, migrants, people escaping abusive relationships, and people who keep a strict boundary between legal identity and dating presence.
2) Data concentration risk
If every dating app becomes an identity provider, we create a new honeypot. A breach is not just "email + preference". It can become identity documents, face data, and verification metadata.
3) Surveillance creep
Once the platform has verified identity, the temptation is to use it for other purposes: enforcement, cross-platform linking, or "trust scores". This is how safety systems become control systems.

What good verification should look like
- Data minimisation by architecture. Verify once, then store the minimum possible proof state.
- Separation of concerns. Identity proof should not be directly accessible to the product team, ranking system, or ad stack.
- User-visible scope. Make it legible what was verified: "age" is different from "legal name".
- Appeals and recovery. Safety systems without appeals become arbitrary power.
- Do not turn verification into a paywall. If it is infrastructure, it cannot be premium.
The likely outcome: proof-of-identity becomes table stakes
As bots, scams, deepfakes, and impersonation scale, platforms will be pushed toward "verified-by-default" experiences. Some will do this responsibly. Many will do it badly, concentrating sensitive data while claiming safety.
The end state is not "verification solves dating". The end state is simpler: proof-of-identity becomes normal, and the real differentiator becomes what the platform does with that power.
